Sex workers to protest against Covid-19 preventative measure

Sex workers protest

Female Sex Workers Association (FSWA) says it’s planning to hold demonstrations to express their concerns with government’s decision on reducing operating hours for drinking joints.

As one way of reducing further spread of Corona virus which is claiming scores  of lives, a couple of weeks ago President Lazarus Chakwera instructed Malawians to adhere to all Covid-19 preventative measures.

Among others, Chakwera said operating hours for drinking joints would be reduced to six hours starting from 2PM to 8PM.

But in a letter FSWA has written Lilongwe District Council (LDC) and a copy to the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) the sex workers have said the reduction in operating hours for drinking joints has negatively affected them and that they want to make their grievances known to government, through a peaceful protest slated for January 28, from 8 o’clock in the morning.

According to the letter signed by the Association’s Executive Director Zinenani Majawa, the march will start from Lilongwe Community Centre to the District Commissioners office, where the petition will be delivered.

“The peaceful demonstrations have been organized to raise our concerns to the authorities on problems female sex workers are experiencing due to Covid-19 preventative measures government has put in place, particularly on minimizing operating hours for drinking joints,” reads the letter in part.
